Many Will Fall Away
The Last Days According To Jesus - Many Will Fall Away (Mt 24:10)
Matthew 24:10
“At that time many will fall away...”
The church is unlike any other institution on earth. But, just like other organizations, there are those who are totally committed and then there are those who are not. They come to church for a variety reasons but the uncommitted have no staying power.
When the end of time comes, there will be a mass exodus of people from the church. The same thing happened to Jesus at one point in His ministry. In John 6, many of His followers left Him because they didn’t like something He said.
John 6:66
“As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore.”
There are two significant things to note about the above quotation. First of all, notice the chapter and verse numbers? Yeah, that’s kind of freaky, isn’t it? What’s even more important is that Jesus made the parallel connection between that event and His Second Coming. Go back four verses and read the words of Jesus to the disciples who were leaving:
John 6:61-62
“But Jesus, conscious that His disciples grumbled at this, said to them, ‘Does this cause you to stumble? What then if you see the Son of Man ascending to where He was before?’”
Okay, technically He’s talking about His ascension but the point is clear. He is telling them to make sure they are focusing on the right stuff.
Good heavens! They had Jesus! He was standing right in front of them. God in the flesh was teaching them about His nature and His purpose for coming and they chose to walk away! That seems like it would be so difficult to do, yet people did it all the time to Jesus.
Peter spoke the words that every one of us should be ready to speak. When Jesus looked at the 12 - the only ones who remained - He asked them if they were going to leave too?
John 6:68-69
“Simon Peter answered Him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.’”
Tomorrow: what will cause people to leave Him in the End Times?
