Psalm 23:2 - “He Leads Me Beside Quiet Waters”

"He leads me beside still waters"

Psalm 23:2 paints a picture of a restful lake or stream where the Shepherd gives rest and refreshment to His sheep. Water illustrates life to us. You can't live without water, therefore water is a symbol of life, hope and comfort.

Psalms 1 declares that the blessed man will be “like a tree planted by rivers of water which bears forth fruit in its season.”

Why are we so taken by the imagery of oceans, seas, lakes and rivers? Why do we feel such peace and serenity when we look upon water? It’s because we see in it life and hope and all the good things we need. Water means drinking and cleaning and cooling ourselves off from the heat. It means that we can go on with life and things will be okay. Water is that important.

To the Christian, Jesus is like water. That’s how God wants us to think of His Son. He makes living possible.

John 4:14
"...but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

The still water of Psalm 23 represents life, hope and security. When God leads us to His water, He means that our thirst will be quenched and we can rest from our labors. It means joy instead of sadness and calm instead of confusion. It means life instead of death and hope instead of despair.

It means peace with our God.

John 4:15
“The woman said to Him, ‘Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.’”

Water that quenches forever? Still waters that never run dry? Only the Living Water of God could do that. The Good Shepherd will lead you to it if you follow Him.
