The First Commandment

Exodus 20:3
“You shall have no other gods before Me.”
When God told Moses the ten most important things about having a relationship with Him, He didn’t mince any words. That relationship was to be an exclusive one.
To some people, it seems kind of arrogant of God to demand that we give Him first place in our lives. What kind of relationship is that? Shouldn’t our love for Him come out of a desire instead of a command? The answer to that can be summed up in three words: YES! YES! YES!
That is exactly the case. God is not unfair or unloving. In fact, 1 John 4:8 tells us that God is love.
So, what is this first commandment all about? To really understand it, we have to understand the book of Genesis. In Genesis, we learn that God created us. What’s more, He created us with a plan and a purpose. We were created to worship Him and we were made “in His image.”
Let’s put all of this together. What God is saying is that if we want to be really complete ... if we want to be fulfilled as humans ... if we want to find true meaning and purpose in our lives, we have to understand why we are here.
