WALK - 20 Amazing Bible Words To Know: (peripateo - Part A)
If there were a single word to describe what the Christian life is all about it would be the work “walk.” The Bible tells us to stand firm, run the race, sit in the assembly and even leap for joy but over and over we are commanded to walk with Him. The New Testament repeats that word about 100 times.
Interestingly, it was the walk of those who didn’t know Jesus that He spoke about the most. They were walking all wrong. They walked in long robes, walked over white-washed tombs, walked in the traditions of the elders, walked in darkness and walked wherever they wished. Some of them, in fact, didn’t walk at all. They were the lame … the crippled.
Then they met Jesus. He gave people them the ability to walk for the first time. When His enemies attacked Him for that, He said:
Matthew 9:5
“Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, and walk’?”
Isn’t that an interesting connection? Forgiveness and walking became connected somehow. After encountering the forgiving touch of Jesus, people walked. These were the crippled, the lame, and the dead. Yes, I said dead. Remember the daughter of Jairus?
Mark 5:42
“Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded.”
When John the Baptist wanted proof that Jesus was the Messiah, Jesus told him that the lame were walking. Walking, it seems, is a sign of life. Our walk tells others about the kind of life we have been given. So, what about you? What does your walk tell others about your relationship with Jesus?
Tomorrow, we’ll see how Paul picked up where Jesus left off, telling us exactly what it means to walk in Christ.
