Walk Humbly

Walk Humbly With Your God

Micah 6:8
“…do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.”

As a pastor, I have the privilege of spending a lot of time with many godly men and women. As I spend time with godly people I ask myself what it is that makes them so godly. What stands out most as their predominant spiritual trait?

I would say that the single most important quality that they all seem to share is the absolute importance of humility before God. A Christian woman or man who grows in Christ will grow close enough to one day understand this principle: the closer you get to God the more you realize how far away from Him you really are.

It works like this: to really know God, you have to understand two truths: what the holiness of God means and what sin has done to you. You cannot come to terms with those two concepts and not be humbled.

So, how do we get close to God according to the godly men and women of the Bible? By humbling ourselves. Look at these words of James:

James 4:10
"Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you."

And the words of Mary,

Luke 1:52-53
“He has brought down rulers from their thrones, and has exalted those who were humble. He has filled the hungry with good things; and sent away the rich empty-handed."

God loves our humility. Pride, wealth, ego, self-centeredness and lack of love for others are obstacles in our journey to Him. Do you want to really excel in your relationship with God? Seek humility and God will take you to new heights ... but He has to take you there. You can't get there yourself. You have to start that journey by humbling yourself.

Mark 9:35
“Sitting down, He called the twelve and said to them, ‘If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.’”
