"You anoint my head with oil" - Psalms 23:5

Anointing the head with oil is something we rarely see nowadays. Because of that, we have a hard time appreciating it’s significance. Oil has always been a valued commodity. Not only is it expensive but it has many uses. In David’s time, oil was used for everything from providing light to healing wounds.
As a King, David had a special experience with oil. When God chose him to be the king, he was anointed with oil in the presence of his own brothers.
1 Samuel 16:13
"Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward."
To David, being anointed with oil meant that God found favor with him. It meant that he had been chosen for something great. Furthermore, he would be equipped with the strength and power needed to accomplish what God had in store for him.
God had a purpose for David. He chose him for greatness, blessed him with incredible ability and talent and He poured out His spirit on him. God enabled David to be a great king and he was.
God has a purpose in mind whenever He moves or speaks. Every believer has a place in the body of Christ and every verse has a purpose in the Bible. What I’m getting at is that God placed THIS verse into His Bible for a reason. It is there so that you and I will read it and think about what it means to be anointed.
What does it mean to and me? We may not have been chosen to be kings but we are special and unique to God. He has made you wonderfully and He knows who you are and what your purpose is. Today, your prayer should move you to seek how God can use you to the fullest of your abilities.
What has God empowered you to do? Your purpose is always found in His glory. The secret to living a happy and meaningful life is to live your life in a way that brings glory to Him. Once you are doing that, the Holy Spirit will lead you and help you along the way.
He created you for this and God has anointed you. You are designed and empowered for His glory. Live that life and God will bless you.
